Adaptation in coastal zones: From Science to Action

UNEP/MAP (Mediterranean Action Plan), co-organiser of the Mediterranean Pavilion at COP27, discusses climate-related issues and environmental risks along the Mediterranean coastline on 12 November at 12:30 pm at the event “Adaptation in coastal zones: From science to action” organised by PAP/RAC, Priority Actions Programme/Regional Activity Centre of UNEP/MAP.

Still, population growth, lifestyles, intensive tourism industry and scarce water resources, particularly in the South and East of the basin, put the Mediterranean and its people under the threat of climate change, loss of biodiversity, increasing pollution and degradation of land and sea.

Scientists and decision-makers discuss the topic, based on MedECC reports and the experience of the UNEP/MAP components - PAP/RAC and Plan Bleu, focusing on successful cases of climate action through coastal plans, the participatory Climagine method and local forecasting.

The event presents how science can support climate action and informed decision-making, how the integrated approach leads to sound policy solutions, and how early involvement of stakeholders is important when it comes to implementation. Furthermore, how it is possible to move from science to action, but also how much more needs to be done for the ecological transition on which the world as we know it depends.  

For over 40 years, Mediterranean countries have worked together to protect their marine and coastal ecosystems through the UNEP/MAP system - Barcelona Convention. One of the Convention's protocols, the Protocol on Integrated Coastal Zone Management, is presented as the world's first legally binding regional instrument that requires the establishment of a 100-metre coastal zone and calls on countries to prepare national coastal strategies and plans. 

Since 2015, the Mediterranean Expert Network on Climate and Environmental Change (MedECC) has been providing scientific information on climate change challenges to policy makers and the general public. Supported by UNEP/MAP and the UfM, MedECC published the First Mediterranean Assessment Report in 2020 and one of its coordinators led the cross-sectional chapter on the Mediterranean within the IPCC AR6.
