Global Climate Data with the ERA Explorer Map

The ERA Explorer app is a new tool based on Copernicus Climate Change that brings key global climate data to everyone’s fingertips. This app allows users to explore 85 years of climate data, providing climatological averages from around the globe. By clicking on any point on the map or using the search bar, users can view temperature and rainfall data based on 30-year averages, helping identify the hottest, coldest, wettest, and driest places on the planet.
Users can create personalized visualizations by downloading the displayed graph data in CSV format and compare data from any part of the world, including remote areas. ERA Explorer can calculate daily, monthly, and annual statistics from over 80 years of hourly ERA5 data in just a few seconds.

This is made possible in part by storing the data using Zarr, a community-driven project for optimized cloud storage of large, multidimensional datasets. Whether it's a long time series for a single location, a small area, or a large area for a short time span, users can easily pull the data they need.

This new app is the result of months of design and development across departments at C3S and the wider European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, with the support of the Horizon Europe ASPECT project.
