An agreement for the marine environment
INFO/RAC and the Permanent Secretariat of the Pelagos Agreement signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 18 December 2024.
The agreement represents a significant milestone for the protection of the marine environment, especially for the protection of the mammals that inhabit the Pelagos Sanctuary.
The Pelagos Agreement has been an official partner of the Barcelona Convention since 2023, and the MoU is testament to the desire to work together for a healthier, more resilient and sustainable Mediterranean.
The use of technological and digital tools, are the pivot of this Memorandum: they will allow the sharing and integrated management of environmental data essential to monitor and assess the health of the Mediterranean. Not only that, the agreement also envisages the production of digital communication materials and the organisation of educational and awareness-raising initiatives, useful for increasing knowledge of the Sanctuary and reaching schools, institutions and communities.
For INFO/RAC, "Through the use of innovative platforms, advanced data management systems and digital approaches to communication, we can not only improve the efficiency of our actions, but also increase public awareness and community involvement".
INFO/RAC, operating within the framework of the Barcelona Convention, has as its mandate the collection, management and dissemination of information, public awareness and support for decision-making processes at all levels, from local to regional. The Pelagos Agreement, for its part, represents a pillar in the protection of marine biodiversity, thanks to the joint commitment of France, Italy and the Principality of Monaco.
The signing of this Memorandum strengthens the collaboration of the two organisations and consolidates technological and digital tools as key levers to address environmental challenges.
