Evaluation of the Regional Action Plans Approach for species and habitats conservation

The SPA/RAC is launching a call for consultation to evaluate the approach of the Regional Action Plans for species and habitats adopted under the SPA/DB Protocol, and to identify recommendations for the way forward in the light of the new Global Biodiversity Framework, the Post-2020 SAPBIO and the EcAp/IMAP processes of the Barcelona Convention. Deadline for submission: 30 July 2024.

Call for papers from plan Bleu - Environmentally Friendly Economic Tools and Finances: The Path towards sustainability in the mediterranean

This Call for Papers invites researchers to explore new approaches and insights into the realm of Green Economic Tools and Public Finances, focusing on the Mediterranean region. All papers should present evidence-based analyses and offer pragmatic policy recommendations to enhance sustainability and resilience in the area. This can contribute to better implementing UNEP-MAP’s Barcelona Convention and its protocols and be of key support to its Contracting Parties. Papers with different focuses are welcome. 

Summary and timeline for the call for papers

  • July 30th : Deadline for Submission of Draft Concept Notes
  • mid-August : Review and Selection Process 
  • early September : Announcement of selected Concept Notes, Contractualisation and launching work on the papers
  • October/November : Travel arrangements for authors of selected paper (one author per paper) –  Including visas (when applicable)
  • December 6th: Submission of first draft of selected papers (15 pages)
  • January/February 2025 :  Presentation at the Plan Bleu conference
  • early April 2025 : Submission of the final version of papers (maximum 25 pages)
  • May 2025 : Completion of the peer-review process 
  • September 2025 : Publication in Plan Bleu Edited Volume

Calling young people working for a blue and green transition in the Mediterranean

The CIHEAM Youth Innovation Award rewards innovative solutions, designed and implemented by young people, to accelerate green and blue transition processes towards more sustainable, inclusive and equitable food systems in the Mediterranean. Deadline date: 15 August 2024.

Minimising climate impact on aquaculture: mitigation and adaptation solutions for future climate regimes

Proposals are expected to enhance knowledge of the impacts of climate change on aquaculture production at environmental, social and economic levels. They should identify, forecast and assess the main effects of climate change on different aquaculture production systems and on their ecological carrying capacity. Deadline dates: two stages 22 February 2024 & 17 September 2024, both at 17 PM (Brussels time).

Calls for proposals under the Adaptation to Climate Change and Restore our oceans and water by 20230 Horizon Europe Missions

In line with the Horizon Europe 2023-205 work programme, the European Commission has launched three new calls for proposals under the Adaptation to Climate Change and Restore our oceans and water by 20230 Horizon Europe Missions. Deadlines 18 September 2024.

Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA)

PRIMA has launched new calls that address strategic research and innovation objectives through a comprehensive and interconnected response.The integration of the 'Nexus' approach aims to contribute to the overall security and sustainability of the sector in the Mediterranean region. The thematic areas for 2024 are divided into two sections comprising Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) and Innovation actions (IA):

Section 1 – Water Management in the Nexus 2024 - Sustainability of Mediterranean irrigated agriculture through the implementation of the WEFE Nexus approach (IA): projects should focus on mitigating barriers to the effective implementation of the Nexus WEFE approach for new irrigation technologies;

Section 1 – Farming Systems in the Nexus 2024 - Transformative Adaptation of Mediterranean dry farming systems using water harvesting techniques to address extreme drought in arid and semi-arid environments (IA): the topic aims to address the challenges of dryland agriculture in the arid areas of the Mediterranean by integrating traditional and modern water technologies to create sustainable and resilient agricultural systems;

Section 1 – Food Value-chain in the Nexus 2024 - Developing cost-effective and sustainable technologies adapted to Mediterranean Food Systems to decrease food loss and waste (IA): the topic aims to support the implementation and demonstration of sustainable solutions to reduce food loss and waste, save energy and improve food safety during post-harvest activities, including transport, storage and processing.

Submission deadline:  Section 1 Stage 1, April 2nd 2024 (pre proposal); Section 1 Stage 2, September 25th 2024

Section 2 - Water management in the Nexus - Effective water accounting approaches under crisis conditions: climate change and external shocks (RIA): The objective is to improve water management, including in the face of climate change and geopolitical and socio-economic shocks;

Section 2 - Farming systems in the Nexus - Revitalizing agroforestry practices for sustainable land use and climate resilience in the Mediterranean Region (RIA): This topic aims to support the revitalisation of agroforestry systems;

Section 2 - Food value chain in the Nexus Leveraging urban and local food systems for sustainable food systems transformation (RIA): Proposals for this topic should aim to strengthen regulatory frameworks for urban and peri-urban agriculture, paying particular attention to the unique challenges faced in Southern Mediterranean countries.

Submission deadline: Section 2 Stage 1, April 4th 2024 (pre proposal): Section 2 Stage 2, September 26th 2024

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) are the European Union’s reference programme for doctoral education and postdoctoral training. The Commission announced the following new 2024 calls: 

Feedback to Policy, deadline 3 September 2024;

MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships, deadline 11 September 2024

MSCA COFUND, deadline 26 September 2024.

COST call 2024

The open call 2024 is open. Participants are invited to submit COST Action proposals contributing to the scientific, technological, economic, cultural or societal knowledge advancement and development of Europe. Multi- and interdisciplinary proposals are encouraged.

Submission deadline:  23 October 2024 at 12.00 (noon - CEST).

Second joint transnational call sustainable blue economy partnership

This second co-funded call aims to support transnational research and innovation projects (36 months) addressing one of the four priority areas below:

(1) Digital Twins of the Oceans (DTO) at regional sub basin scale;

(2) Blue economy sectors, development of marine multi-use infrastructures;

(3) Planning and managing sea-uses at the regional level;

(4) Blue Bioresources.

Deadline: pre proposal 10 April 2024; full proposal 6 November 2024.
